Saltpsring Island

We decided to spend our sunny Sunday out on Saltspring Island.

Sarah enjoying her very first ferry ride.

There were three other ferries out while we were on the water - Likely coming from the mainland.

There it is - Saltspring Island!

Sarah and Mum wait while the ferry docks at the island.

The first thing Dad wanted to do was check out the boats at the harbour.

Dad got pretty excited when he came across an original Mini Cooper just like the one he used to drive in Wales (only in a different colour).

Hey Ned - Can you build a bike like THIS??

There are statues all over the island, all done by local artists.

On the advice of a woman at the information centre, we went to a local cheese farm. They have windows that let you look in on the whole process - Here Mum and Dad watch cheese being poured into moulds.

We tested several varieties of their cheese (garlic, lemon, pepper, chili, lavender) before deciding what to buy (we left with one basil and one blue).

Kyle made a friend

Dad was pretty excited about our purchase!
We took our fresh cheese and some locally baked bread, and headed for a secluded beach for a picnic.

Our path to the beach was through a turkey farm!

It was a quick hike - We saw our destination after about 5-minutes of walking.

We had heard that Grandma's Beach was not going to be very busy, and we heard right. We were the only people there for the better part of the two hours we spent there.

Looking for a picnic spot.

Enjoying our picnic lunch!

Basil cheese on fresh bread... so great.

Kyle, of course, had to go swimming.

Our view.

I walked out (it was low tide) to take a picture of Dad at our picnic spot.

There were tons of crabs on the beach.

Kyle finally got in the water, and yelled "Oh, it's cold!" as soon as he got in.

Sarah climbed up on the rocks.

Kyle found a not-so-comfy place to relax and dry off after his swim.

I was there too!

We left the beach and headed back to the ferry (we'd put a roast in the crock pot for dinner that we we anxious to get back to - It was delicious!)

We couldn't have asked for a better day on Saltspring Island! The weather and food made the trip more than we expected.
